War Pass, sidelined since the April 5 Wood Memorial (gr. I), recently was X-rayed and “isn’t healing as quickly as hoped,” owner Robert LaPenta said July 22.

The Eclipse Award-winning 2-year-old male champion of 2007 finished second to Tale of Ekati in the Wood. The son of Cherokee Run—Vue, by Mr. Prospector, emerged from the Wood with a fracture in a sesamoid bone in his left front leg.

After War Pass is retired from racing, he will stand at William S. Farish’s Lanes End Farm near Versailles, Ky. LaPenta said he plans to consult with the Farish family to find out if they would entertain the possibility of War Pass racing as a 4-year-old.

So, right now, “everything’s up in the air” regarding War Pass’ future, LaPenta added while speaking during a national media teleconference.

As a 2-year-old, War Pass registered victories in the Champagne Stakes (gr. I) at Belmont Park and Bessemer Trust Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (gr. I) at Monmouth Park. Trained by Nick Zito, the Kentucky-bred colt has won five of seven career starts.

Despite the injury to War Pass, LaPenta and Zito still managed to win this year’s Belmont Stakes (gr. I) with Da’ Tara, who is scheduled to run July 27 in Saratoga’s Jim Dandy Stakes (gr. II).
