Dagnabit won the $107,300 Tremont and Bold Union captured the $109,500 Astoria in a pair of stakes for 2-year-olds at Belmont Stakes June 29.

Trainer Richard Dutrow Jr., fresh off a 40-1 stakes upset with Frost Giant a day earlier, saddled Lansdon B. Robbins III and Thomas Hamsen’s Dagnabit, who got up in the final strides to defeat front-running Regardlesoftheoutcome by a half-length in the Tremont for juveniles at 5 1/2 furlongs.

Later on the card, George and Lori Hall’s favored Bold Union ran away from six rivals to win the 5 1/2-furlong Astoria for juvenile fillies. She was a 9 3/4-length victor in 1:05.92.

A New York-bred son of Freud, Dagnabit is unbeaten in two starts while racing without the anti-bleeding medication Lasix.

A steady rally by Dagnabit and jockey Cornelio Velasquez eventually overtook Regardlesoftheoutcome. His winning time was 1:06.68.

It was nine lengths back to Essenceofthemoon, who was followed by Houseful and the disappointing Mr Mistoffelees, the 1-5 favorite.

“He stumbled badly at the start, and it took him out of his element,” said Todd Pletcher, trainer of Mr Mistoffelees. “Speed is his weapon, and he lost that in the first jump.”

Dagnabit paid $10.80, $4.50 and $7.80. Regardlesofoutcome returned $5.10 and $12.40. Essenceofthemoon paid $12.40 to show.

Bold Union, a Dixie Union filly trained by Kelly Breen, is unbeaten in two starts after her impressive Astoria victory.

Under jockey Stewart Elliott, she secured an outside path to target front-running Lori Z’s Punch, who broke from the rail to set the pace on a fast track under thundering skies. At the quarter-pole, the leader retreated and Bold Union kicked away to put the issue to rest, galloping home effortlessly.

“She trained great,” Breen said. “It looked like she did everything professionally; you couldn’t ask for a better day. There are three stakes races up at Saratoga (to consider). I don’t know if we’re going to make it opening day, or wait until later. The horse will tell us how she’s doing.”

Saratoga, which opens on July 23, offers three traditional graded stakes for juvenile fillies: the $100,000 Schuylerville (gr. III) at six furlongs on opening day; the $150,000 Adirondack (gr. II) at 6 1/2 furlongs on Aug. 13; and the $250,000 Spinaway (gr. I) at seven furlongs on Aug. 31.

Girlfriendontheside was second and Golden Artemis headed Pride for the show. Ride on Josephine, Winning Brew and Lori Z’s Punch trailed.

Bold Union paid $5.70, $4.30 and $3.20 as the 9-5 favorite. Girlfrienontheside was the distant runner-up, returning $8.90 and $4.20. Golden Artemis paid $5.10 to show.
